The film
About the film
Three crooks hold up a Mob bank in Harlem and escape with $300,000, but the heist goes awry, leaving Black and Italian gangsters and two police officers dead. The massacre sparks all-out war on the streets of New York as the Black and Italian mobs and the police race to find the culprits. On the case are veteran Captain Mattelli (Anthony Quinn), a bigot prone to violent outbursts, and Lt. Pope (Yaphet Kotto), a less experienced Black detective assigned for 'political reasons', who must learn to work together to survive.
Shot on location in New York with then state-of-the-art handheld cameras, Across 110th Street is a gritty, violent piece of 70s cinema that fuses blaxploitation and film noir, with a memorable soul and funk soundtrack from J.J. Johnson and Bobby Womack, whose legendary title track was later adopted by Quentin Tarantino and Ridley Scott.
