Avatar (2009) is an epic science fiction film written, directed, and co-produced by James Cameron. Set in the mid-22nd century, the film stars Sam Worthington as Jake Sully, a paraplegic former Marine who is sent to the alien world of Pandora as part of a corporate and military operation. The story follows Jake as he takes control of a genetically engineered Na’vi body—an “avatar”—to interact with the native people of Pandora. As he learns their ways and forms a deep bond with Neytiri, he becomes torn between his duty to his human employers and his growing allegiance to the Na’vi and their spiritual connection to the planet. The conflict reaches a climax when the humans attempt to destroy Pandora’s sacred sites for resources, and Jake chooses to fight alongside the Na’vi to defend their home.

Avatar became a global phenomenon, breaking box office records and becoming the highest-grossing film of all time (until briefly surpassed). It won three Academy Awards (for Cinematography, Art Direction, and Visual Effects) and was praised for its visual innovation, environmental themes, and immersive world-building.
