The film
About the film
A bold American remake of Jean-Luc Godard’s 1960 New Wave classic, Breathless (1983) reimagines the story with neon-drenched flair and an ’80s rock ‘n’roll pulse. Richard Gere stars as Jesse Lujack, a fast-talking, comic book–obsessed drifter on the run after killing a cop. Obsessed with Silver Surfer and Elvis, Jesse tracks down his French girlfriend Monica (Valérie Kaprisky) in Los Angeles, hoping to convince her to flee to Mexico. As the net tightens, their romance becomes more frantic and doomed. Directed by Jim McBride, Breathless is brash, kinetic, and unapologetically stylish — a cult favorite for fans of outlaw cinema.
