The film
About the film
Directed by Paul Verhoeven, Benedetta is a provocative biographical drama set in 17th‑century Italy. The film follows Virginie Efira as Benedetta Carlini, a young nun who enters the convent of Pescia and begins experiencing visions of Christ. When a peasant girl, Bartolomea (Daphné Patakia), joins the convent, Benedetta’s spiritual conversion becomes complicated by a passionate and forbidden relationship. As the abbess, Mother Felicita (Charlotte Rampling), grows wary, Benedetta’s powersÑand her defianceÑlead to scandal, danger and a challenge to the Church’s authority. With religious fervour, erotic tension, and a ruthless critique of power, Benedetta is both a historical drama and a bold modern provocation.
