The film

About the film

Dark Water (2002), directed by Hideo Nakata (Ringu), is a chilling Japanese psychological horror that weaves supernatural dread with human vulnerability. The story follows Yoshimi, a recently divorced mother fighting for custody of her young daughter, Ikuko. When they move into a run-down apartment, strange water leaks begin to spread from the ceiling, and eerie signs suggest the presence of a missing child who once lived there.

Unlike many ghost stories,¬†Dark Water is less about jump scares and more about atmosphereÑrain, water stains, and dampness become constant symbols of anxiety and loss. As Yoshimi's grip on reality begins to blur, the film explores themes of parental responsibility, abandonment, and the lingering weight of trauma.

The film became an influential entry in the wave of J-horror that swept global cinema in the early 2000s, leading to a Hollywood remake in 2005 starring Jennifer Connelly. While the U.S. version leaned more on conventional scares, Nakata's original remains celebrated for its subtlety, emotional resonance, and hauntingly tragic ending.
