About the film
John Boorman’s Excalibur is a bold and visually arresting adaptation of the Arthurian legends, blending myth, mysticism, and medieval brutality. Drawing from Sir Thomas Malory’s Le Morte d’Arthur, the film charts the rise and fall of King Arthur (Nigel Terry), from the forging of the sword Excalibur to the bloody quest for the Holy Grail. With striking performances from Helen Mirren as the sorceress Morgana, Nicol Williamson as the eccentric Merlin, and a score steeped in Wagner and Orff, Excalibur casts a hypnotic spellÑits gleaming armor, pagan magic, and Shakespearean grandeur defining it as one of the definitive Arthurian epics.
