Hoskins delivers one of the most nuanced and moving performances of his career — a portrayal that swept major Best Actor awards including Cannes, a BAFTA, and a Golden Globe. His George is a man shaped by circumstance and criminal loyalty, yet still clinging to a moral core when the opportunity for redemption appears.

Director Neil Jordan (The Company of Wolves, The Crying Game) and co-writer David Leland (Made in Britain) blend hard-edged realism with unexpected romanticism. The recurring strains of the Nat King Cole title song transform seedy British locations like Soho and Brighton into something strangely lyrical and haunting.
