The Running Man (1987) is a dystopian sci-fi action thriller directed by Paul Michael Glaser, based loosely on Stephen King’s novel (written under the pseudonym Richard Bachman). Set in a totalitarian future America, the film follows Ben Richards (Arnold Schwarzenegger), a wrongly convicted ex-cop forced to participate in a brutal televised game show where criminals must survive against flamboyant killers known as “Stalkers.” Framed as entertainment for a pacified society, the show masks state oppression and propaganda.

Richards turns the tide by fighting back against the system, exposing the show’s lies and inciting rebellion. The film critiques media manipulation, authoritarianism, and desensitization to violence, wrapped in ‘80s-style explosive action. Schwarzenegger delivers one-liners and physical dominance typical of the era, while the supporting cast—including María Conchita Alonso, Richard Dawson (as the sadistic show host), and Yaphet Kotto—brings texture to the stylized chaos.
