The film
About the film
Directed by Robert Wise, The Sound of Music is one of cinema’s most beloved musicals, blending romance, history, and unforgettable music. Julie Andrews stars as Maria, a free-spirited postulant sent from her Austrian convent to work as a governess for the seven children of widowed naval captain Georg von Trapp (Christopher Plummer). Her warmth and music transform the household, eventually winning over both the children and the Captain himself.
Set against the looming threat of Nazi annexation, the story balances lighthearted musical numbers with deeper historical drama. Rodgers and Hammerstein’s songsÑincluding "Do-Re-Mi," "My Favorite Things," and "Edelweiss"Ñbecame timeless standards, while Andrews’ radiant performance anchors the film’s heart.
Winner of five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, The Sound of Music became a cultural phenomenon and remains one of the most-watched films of all time. Its blend of sweeping Alpine landscapes, iconic music, and themes of family, resilience, and hope ensures its lasting legacy.
