About the film
FIVE CRIMINALS. ONE LINE UP. NO COINCIDENCE.
Amid the wave of neo-noir thrillers that swept American cinema throughout the 1990s, few films left a mark as enduring as The Usual Suspects. Winner of two Academy Awards® and widely regarded as one of the greatest crime films ever made, Bryan Singer’s modern classic redefined the genre with its razor-sharp screenplay, unforgettable performances and one of cinema’s most celebrated twists.
After a brutal massacre aboard a cargo ship off the coast of Los Angeles leaves 27 men dead, Special Agent Dave Kujan (Chazz Palminteri) interrogates one of only two survivors, small-time con artist Verbal Kint (Kevin Spacey). During the interview, Kint recounts how he and four other career criminals—Dean Keaton (Gabriel Byrne), Mike McManus (Stephen Baldwin), Fred Fenster (Benicio del Toro) and Todd Hockney (Kevin Pollak)—were recruited by the mysterious crime lord Keyser Söze to carry out a series of increasingly dangerous heists. But as Kint’s story grows ever more elaborate, Kujan becomes convinced that nothing is quite as it seems.
Featuring Christopher McQuarrie’s Academy Award-winning screenplay and an exceptional ensemble cast, The Usual Suspects remains an essential entry in the canon of American independent cinema.
