The film
About the film
Fresh is a gripping crime drama directed by Boaz Yakin that explores the harsh realities of poverty, drugs, and survival in Brooklyn. The story follows 12-year-old Michael, nicknamed “Fresh” (played by Sean Nelson), a quiet but brilliant kid working as a drug runner for local dealers. Though caught in a dangerous environment, Fresh uses his intelligence—shaped by playing chess with his alcoholic father (Samuel L. Jackson)—to strategize a way out. Unlike most urban crime films of the ’90s, Fresh focuses less on violence for spectacle and more on the psychological and moral struggles of a child forced to become an adult too soon. Both raw and deeply thoughtful, the film examines themes of manipulation, sacrifice, and resilience, cementing itself as an underappreciated classic of the decade.
