The film
About the film
Paul Sheldon made his name writing bestselling romance novels. Now, he’ll have to write for his life.
Directed by Rob Reiner and adapted by acclaimed screenwriter William Goldman from Stephen King’s bestselling novel, Misery is one of cinema’s greatest psychological thrillers. James Caan stars as novelist Paul Sheldon, who is rescued after a devastating car accident by his self-proclaimed “number one fan”, Annie Wilkes, played in an Academy Award-winning performance by Kathy Bates. What begins as an act of kindness quickly descends into a terrifying nightmare as Annie’s obsessive devotion turns increasingly unstable, leaving Paul trapped in a remote house with little hope of escape.
Featuring an outstanding supporting cast including Lauren Bacall, Richard Farnsworth and Frances Sternhagen, Misery remains a masterclass in suspense, with Reiner delivering Hitchcockian tension and unforgettable performances that continue to captivate audiences more than three decades later.
