The film
About the film
Steven Kovacs (Matthew Broderick) thinks he’s simply getting his cable connected. Instead, he finds himself trapped in a nightmare when eccentric cable installer Chip Douglas (Jim Carrey) becomes dangerously obsessed with being his best friend. What begins as awkward acts of generosity quickly spirals into stalking, manipulation and psychological torment as Chip refuses to let Steven escape their one-sided friendship.
Directed by Ben Stiller, The Cable Guy subverts Jim Carrey’s signature comedic persona with a brilliantly dark performance that blends unsettling suspense with razor-sharp satire. Initially divisive upon release, the film has since become a cult favourite, celebrated as a black comedy that was well ahead of its time.
