Sean Baker’s The Florida Project is a tender yet unflinching look at childhood lived in the shadows of America’s dream. Set on the fringes of Disney World in Kissimmee, Florida, the film follows six-year-old Moonee and her friends as they spend their summer running wild in and around the pastel-colored “Magic Castle” motel. Through Moonee’s eyes, the world is filled with wonder, mischief, and adventure, even as the adults around her struggle with poverty, eviction, and survival.

Her mother, Halley, a rebellious young woman barely scraping by, hustles to keep them afloat, often clashing with authority and skirting the edge of desperation. Motel manager Bobby, played by Willem Dafoe in one of his most humane roles, becomes a quiet guardian, doing what he can to shield the children while keeping the fragile balance of the community intact.

Baker uses vibrant cinematography, naturalistic performances, and handheld realism to contrast the innocence of childhood with the harsh reality of systemic poverty. The result is both heartbreaking and joyous—a portrait of resilience and imagination in the face of neglect and precarity. The Florida Project is at once a love letter to childhood and a stark reminder of the unseen lives lived at the margins of the “Happiest Place on Earth.”
