About the film
David Bowie, in his first starring film role, is Thomas Jerome Newton, a visitor from a distant, drought-stricken planet who comes to Earth in search of a way to bring water home. Using his advanced knowledge to patent a string of revolutionary inventions, he builds a vast corporate empire – but the longer he stays, the more he is drawn into the temptations of life on Earth.
Directed by Nicolas Roeg from Paul Mayersberg's adaptation of the novel by Walter Tevis, and co-starring Rip Torn, Candy Clark and Buck Henry, The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976) is a hypnotic, fragmented vision of alienation and loneliness that remains one of the most distinctive science-fiction films of the 1970s.
