About the film
Witness (1985) is a crime thriller and romantic drama directed by Peter Weir, starring Harrison Ford as John Book, a Philadelphia detective who uncovers police corruption while protecting a young Amish boy. The film blends suspense with a quiet exploration of cultural contrasts between modern urban life and traditional Amish values.
The story begins when Samuel, a young Amish boy, witnesses a brutal murder in a train station restroom. Detective Book is assigned to the case and soon discovers that the killers are members of his own police department. After being wounded, Book takes refuge with SamuelÕs family in their rural Amish community. While recovering and hiding, he forms a deep connection with SamuelÕs mother, Rachel, played by Kelly McGillis, sparking a subtle and forbidden romance.
Witness was praised for its strong performances, emotional depth, and distinctive setting, and is widely regarded as one of Harrison FordÕs finest dramatic roles.
