Barry Lyndon (1975), directed by Stanley Kubrick, is a visually sumptuous period drama chronicling the rise and fall of Redmond Barry (Ryan O’Neal), an Irish opportunist who climbs the social ladder of 18th-century European aristocracy through duels, deceit, and a loveless marriage. Adapted from William Makepeace Thackeray’s novel, the film tracks Barry’s transformation into a refined but ultimately tragic figure, as his ambition and vanity lead to isolation and ruin.
