About the film
PHILIP MARLOWE IS A PRIVATE EYE. FOR FIFTY BUCKS YOU CAN BUY HIS BRAIN, HIS FISTS AND HIS .44 MAGNUM SPECIAL. IF YOU WANT BLOOD, HEÕLL GIVE YOU THAT, TOO!
Following in the footsteps of Dick Powell in Murder, My Sweet and Humphrey Bogart in The Big Sleep, James Garner brought iconic private investigator Philip Marlowe into the Age of Aquarius in Marlowe, a neo-noir adaptation of The Little Sister by Raymond Chandler.
When Orfamay Quest hires Philip Marlowe to find her missing brother, it appears to be just another routine case. But MarloweÕs investigation soon uncovers a web of blackmail, murder and corruption, all tied to a ruthless mobster and his glamorous television-star mistress. As he moves through a world of starlets, gangsters, suspicious police and corpses with ice picks driven into their necks, Marlowe finds himself in deeper trouble than he ever expected.
James GarnerÕs relaxed, wisecracking style proves a perfect fit for ChandlerÕs hard-boiled detective, anticipating the persona he would later bring to The Rockford Files. The supporting cast includes Carroll OÕConnor, Rita Moreno, Jackie Coogan, Gayle Hunnicutt and Bruce Lee, making his American feature film debut years before Enter the Dragon.
