he Coffee Table (La mesita del comedor, 2022) is a Spanish dark comedy-drama directed by Caye Casas. The film stars David Pareja and Estefan’a de los Santos as Jesœs and Mar’a, a couple adjusting to life with their newborn baby. Tensions rise when Jesœs insists on buying an ugly, oversized coffee table against Mar’aÕs wishes. This seemingly trivial decision sets off a chain of events that leads to a shocking and devastating accident, altering their lives forever.

The film unfolds in a confined domestic space, amplifying its intense psychological atmosphere. As Jesœs desperately tries to hide the horrific truth from his wife and their guests, The Coffee Table spirals into a claustrophobic tale of guilt, repression, and crumbling relationships. With its slow-burning tension and pitch-black humour, the film explores the absurdity of everyday decisions and how they can result in irreversible consequences.

Premiering at the 2022 Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, The Coffee Table received critical acclaim for its daring premise and unflinching tone. It later screened at genre festivals such as Fantastic Fest and Fantaspoa, where it was praised for its darkly comic yet deeply disturbing approach to domestic tragedy.
