About the film
At the dawn of the 1970s, Japan is emerging as an economic superpower, and the powerful Nakajima crime syndicate is expanding its influence across the nation. Politicians and corporations alike seek the gangÕs favour, forming lucrative partnerships that blur the lines between organised crime and respectable society. But within the syndicate itself, tensions rise as its leaders debate whether to abandon the old yakuza code in pursuit of wealth and legitimacy.
Directed by Toei yakuza specialist Sadao Nakajima (The Rapacious Jailbreaker), this sprawling crime epic draws inspiration from the real history of JapanÕs largest criminal organisation. The trilogy features an all-star cast of genre icons including Koji Tsuruta (Big Time Gambling Boss, Sympathy for the Underdog), Bunta Sugawara (Battles Without Honour and Humanity) and Sonny Chiba (The Streetfighter, Hokuriku Proxy War).
A landmark of 1970s Japanese crime cinema, The Japanese Godfather Trilogy captures the shifting power structures of both the yakuza underworld and post-war Japan itself.
