Seeking a weekend escape from the city, four friends from Kolkata embark on a driving trip to the countryside, where their urban entitlement, assumptions and prejudices are slowly exposed. Among them is the overconfident Ashim (Soumitra Chatterjee), whose self-assurance is unsettled by Aparna (Sharmila Tagore), an enigmatic young woman whose cool intelligence conceals deeper emotional complexity.

Filmed amid the sun-dappled woodlands of India’s Palamu region, Days and Nights in the Forest is an elegant and incisive examination of masculine ego, friendship, desire and India’s class divisions. Satyajit Ray balances warmth, humour and unease with remarkable subtlety, creating one of the most richly observed films of his career.
