About the film
The Two Jakes (1990) is a neo-noir mystery film directed by and starring Jack Nicholson, serving as a sequel to the 1974 classic Chinatown. Set in post-war Los Angeles in 1948, the story follows private investigator J.J. “Jake” Gittes, who becomes entangled in a complex web of adultery, murder, and real estate corruption when he is hired by real estate developer Julius “Jake” Berman to investigate his wife’s infidelity. The situation escalates when Berman kills his wife’s lover, leading Gittes into a deeper conspiracy involving oil rights and connections to past events from his own life. The film explores themes of moral ambiguity, the inescapability of the past, and the corrupting influence of wealth and power.
