One of the most notorious J-horror films ever made, Audition from director Takashi Miike exploded onto the festival circuit at the turn of the 21st century to widespread acclaim. The film established Miike internationally and paved the way for later works including Ichi the Killer and 13 Assassins.

When recent widower Shigeharu Aoyama, played by Ryo Ishibashi, is encouraged by his son to find a new wife, he turns to a colleague for help after years away from the dating scene. Using their jobs at a film company, the pair stage a fake audition to find the perfect partner. After meeting a succession of women, Shigeharu becomes captivated by Asami, played by Eihi Shiina, a quiet young woman who appears gentle and reserved. But as their relationship develops, it becomes clear that Asami is hiding something far darker than he could ever imagine.

Pulling the audience towards one of the most shocking climaxes in modern horror cinema, Takashi Miike twists the film through dreamlike editing, mounting dread and moments of extreme violence. Presented here in a stunning 4K UHD restoration, Audition remains one of the defining works of Japanese horror.
