The film
About the film
The Devils Backbone (2001) is set in Spain in 1939, near the end of the Spanish Civil War, and follows Carlos, a twelve-year-old boy sent to a remote orphanage after his father is killed in the conflict. The orphanage, run by supporters of the Republican cause, harbors dark secrets, including an unexploded bomb standing ominously in the courtyard. Carlos soon begins to encounter the ghost of a boy named Santi, whose mysterious death is tied to hidden acts of violence and betrayal within the institution. As Carlos uncovers the truth, the film blends a haunting ghost story with a coming-of-age drama, using the supernatural to explore memory, loss, and the lingering trauma of war.
