A Different Man (2024) is a darkly comedic psychological thriller written and directed by Aaron Schimberg. The film stars Sebastian Stan as Edward, a socially awkward man living with a facial disfigurement that isolates him from the world. After undergoing a radical facial reconstruction surgery, Edward reinvents himself with a new identity—physically transformed and seemingly liberated from his past insecurities.

However, when an aspiring actress (played by Renate Reinsve) moves into his building and begins working on a play inspired by Edward’s former life, he becomes obsessed. Consumed by jealousy over the actor (played by Adam Pearson) cast to portray his old self, Edward spirals into paranoia and identity confusion. The film deftly explores themes of self-perception, vanity, authenticity, and the ethics of storytelling.

It’s an unsettling and surreal reflection on what it means to be truly seen—made even more powerful by casting Pearson (who has neurofibromatosis in real life) in a major, empathetic role. Blending body horror, dry humor, and poignant introspection, A Different Man challenges the audience’s assumptions about transformation and visibility.
