All We Imagine as Light, written and directed by Payal Kapadia, is a quietly powerful drama centered on the lives of three women navigating the complex emotional and social terrain of Mumbai. The film follows Prabha, a head nurse haunted by an absent husband; Anu, her younger, more rebellious roommate with a secret affair; and Parvaty, a hospital cook recently evicted from her home. When Prabha and Anu embark on a road trip with Parvaty to her coastal village, tensions, longings, and unspoken grief among them come to light.

Kapadia’s film isn’t driven by plot so much as by mood, small gestures, and internal rhythms. The nocturnal imagery, soft city lights, and moments of silence evoke loneliness, desire, and the search for connection. At Cannes, it became the first Indian film in 30 years to compete in the main festival and won the Grand Prix.
