In the early 21st century, as European art and horror cinema began pushing the boundaries of extremity and endurance, Calvaire emerged as one of the era’s most striking entries. This shattering debut from Belgian director Fabrice Du Welz announced the arrival of a major new voice in genre filmmaking, blending psychological terror with unsettling dark humour.

Travelling cabaret singer Marc Stevens (Laurent Lucas) becomes stranded when his van breaks down in a remote mountain region of France. He is rescued by local innkeeper Mr. Bartel (Jackie Berroyer), who offers to repair the van and provide shelter for the night. But Bartel is fragile, unstable — and convinced that Marc resembles his long-lost wife.

Before long, Bartel refuses to let him leave. With his van sabotaged and no way to call for help, Marc’s nightmare is only just beginning.

Drawing comparisons to Deliverance, Straw Dogs and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Calvaire is a deeply unsettling and darkly comic thriller that grips tightly and refuses to let go.
