Constantine (2005) is a supernatural action-thriller directed by Francis Lawrence, based on DC Comics’ Hellblazer series. Keanu Reeves stars as John Constantine, a cynical occult detective with the ability to perceive the true forms of angels and demons. Condemned to Hell for a past suicide attempt, Constantine seeks redemption by exorcising demons from Earth.

The film follows Constantine as he aids LAPD detective Angela Dodson (Rachel Weisz) in investigating her twin sister’s mysterious death. Their inquiry uncovers a plot by the half-breed angel Gabriel (Tilda Swinton) to unleash Mammon, the son of Lucifer, upon the world. With the Spear of Destiny and Angela as the intended vessel, Gabriel aims to force humanity to earn salvation through suffering. In a climactic confrontation, Constantine sacrifices himself to thwart the plan, prompting Lucifer (Peter Stormare) to intervene. Impressed by Constantine’s selflessness, Lucifer cures his cancer and restores him to life, hoping he will eventually damn himself again. 

Constantine blends noir aesthetics with theological themes, exploring concepts of redemption, faith, and the battle between good and evil. Despite mixed reviews upon release, the film has garnered a cult following for its unique take on the supernatural genre.
