Dark City (1998) is a science fiction neo-noir thriller directed by Alex Proyas. The film stars Rufus Sewell as John Murdoch, a man who wakes up in a strange city with no memory and finds himself accused of murder. Co-starring Jennifer Connelly, Kiefer Sutherland, and William Hurt, the movie explores themes of identity, reality, and control in a haunting, stylized world.

The story follows Murdoch as he pieces together his past while being hunted by mysterious beings known as the Strangers—otherworldly figures who manipulate the city and its inhabitants by halting time and rearranging memories each night. As Murdoch uncovers the truth, he discovers that the city is a giant experiment, and he may be the key to resisting the Strangers’ power and shaping reality itself.

Though not a mainstream hit upon release, Dark City received critical acclaim for its visionary visuals, noir atmosphere, and philosophical depth. It has since gained cult status and is considered a major influence on later sci-fi films, including The Matrix.
