Directed by Sam Mendes and based on Anthony Swofford’s memoir, Jarhead is a stark, psychological portrait of life as a U.S. Marine during the Gulf War. Instead of battlefield glory, he faces boredom, frustration, and emotional disintegration in the desert. With striking cinematography and a hauntingly ironic tone, Jarhead strips war of its traditional heroics to reveal a hollow, alienating experience.
