Materialists Blu-ray (US Edition)

Materialists is a romantic comedy-drama written and directed by Celine Song (following her breakout Past Lives). Set in New York City’s luxury dating world, it stars Dakota Johnson as Lucy Mason, a matchmaker who believes in formulas for love: she thinks clients should marry rich, and she’ll either die alone or marry someone wealthy. Her life becomes complicated when she meets Harry Castillo (Pedro Pascal), a charming millionaire who seems perfect on paper, just as her ex John (Chris Evans), a struggling actor/waiter, reenters her orbit. Torn between choosing the material security Harry offers or the imperfect but genuine connection with John, Lucy must reckon with what truly matters in modern love.

The film explores themes of desire, ambition, identity, and how much of romance is performance and expectation. It’s sharp, emotionally honest, and reflects modern dating culture’s obsession with status, image, and “matchmaking” as both business and emotional labor. Like Song’s earlier work, it mixes warmth and melancholy, grounded performances, and a kind of bittersweet realism that lingers.
