Pearl (2022) serves as a prequel to X (2022), diving into the early life of the titular villain. Set in 1918 on a farmhouse in Texas, Pearl (Mia Goth) is a young woman brimming with ambition—to be a performer, to escape her isolated life caring for her wheelchair-bound father under the harsh rule of her devout German mother, Ruth. As the Spanish Flu pandemic rages outside, and with her husband away at war, Pearl’s frustrations, repressed desires, and violent impulses begin to emerge. Motivated by dreams of Stardom and unfulfilled need for recognition and escape, she commits increasingly horrific acts—animal cruelty, patricide, matricide, and betrayal—blurring the line between desperation and horror. Stylistically, the film juxtaposes Technicolor-inspired melodrama, lush period detail, and raw brutality, creating a disturbing yet mesmerizing origin story of how Pearl becomes the villain seen in X. Mia Goth’s performance anchors the film’s descent into madness, ambition, and violence.
