Brittany, the late eighteenth century. Marianne (Noémie Merlant), a young painter, is commissioned to paint the wedding portrait of Héloïse (Adèle Haenel), a reluctant bride-to-be who has recently left the convent and refuses to sit for it. Presented to her as a walking companion, Marianne must study her subject by day on their walks along the cliffs and paint her in secret by night.

Written and directed by Céline Sciamma, with Luàna Bajrami and Valeria Golino in support, Portrait of a Lady on Fire is a luminous study of looking, memory and desire, shot with painterly precision by cinematographer Claire Mathon. It won the Best Screenplay award at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival.
