Scum (1979), directed by Alan Clarke and written by Roy Minton, is a harrowing British drama that exposes the brutal realities of life inside a borstal—a youth detention center in the UK. Originally produced as a television play in 1977, it was banned by the BBC due to its graphic content. The film was later remade for theatrical release in 1979, featuring a more intense portrayal of institutional violence.

The story follows Carlin (Ray Winstone), a young offender transferred to a new borstal after assaulting a warden. Upon arrival, he becomes a target for the current “Daddy” (the dominant inmate), Banks. After enduring a violent beating, Carlin retaliates, usurping Banks and establishing himself as the new leader. Under his rule, he attempts to bring a semblance of order, protecting weaker inmates from abuse. However, the oppressive environment, marked by systemic racism, sexual violence, and neglectful staff, leads to tragic outcomes, including the suicide of a vulnerable inmate, Davis. The film culminates in a riot, symbolizing the inmates’ collective despair and resistance.

Scum is renowned for its unflinching depiction of institutional failure and has been credited with influencing reforms in the UK’s juvenile justice system. Its raw portrayal of the borstal experience remains a powerful commentary on the dehumanizing effects of such institutions.
