The film

About the film

A curated Jacques Tati collection presenting the director’s comic vision across his major feature films and a later TV piece. Each entry is introduced below in edition order.

Jour de fête

A playful 1949 comedy in which Jacques Tati stars as François, the small-town postman whose genial incompetence and curiosity—fed by gossip, a travelling fair and flashy newsreels about American postal efficiency—lead him to attempt ever-faster deliveries by bicycle, with increasingly comic results.

Les Vacances de Monsieur Hulot

This 1953 comedy follows Tati’s iconic Monsieur Hulot as he arrives at a seaside resort for a holiday. His well-meaning presence sets off a chain of gently choreographed mishaps involving fellow holidaymakers, animals and seaside paraphernalia, establishing Hulot as a memorable comic creation.

Mon Oncle

In this 1958 comedy Jacques Tati returns as Monsieur Hulot, whose affection for a scruffy city flat contrasts with his sister’s new, ultra-modern suburban home. The film centres on Hulot’s attempts to connect with his lively young nephew amid misunderstandings about modern life and the family’s social ambitions.

Playtime

Tati’s 1967 comedy places the bemused Monsieur Hulot in a sleek, gadget-laden Paris where he and an American tourist become entangled in the vast, often bewildering urban landscape. Their parallel journeys meet amid inventive sight gags and a famously chaotic restaurant sequence.

Trafic

This 1971 comedy depicts Monsieur Hulot as the designer at Altra Automotive, presenting a novel camper car. Accompanied by company colleagues and a publicity model, Hulot sets off from Paris to the Amsterdam show, encountering a series of increasingly absurd obstacles along the way.

Parade

A 1974 television piece in which Jacques Tati stages a convivial party-like spectacle, bringing together performers, clowns, children and audience members in a celebration of variety and live showmanship.
