The film
About the film
After helping John Woo rejuvenate the Hong Kong neo-noir with A Better Tomorrow, producer Tsui Hark took the genre in a darker, more cynical direction with The Big Heat, a hauntingly visceral and unflinchingly violent thriller written by Gordon Chan and featuring a mesmerising central performance by Waise Lee.
Inspector Wong Wai-Pong (Lee), fearing nerve damage in his right hand will make him a liability, contemplates resigning. When his former partner is murdered while hiding in Malaysia he resolves to push through his disability to investigate. Joined by rookie Lun, veteran Kam and Malaysian officer Ong, their international inquiry links the killing to Hong Kong’s wealthy business elite and the city’s criminal underworld.
