In this gripping New York City-set thriller, a group of armed men hijack a subway train on the Pelham Bay Park line, demanding a $1 million ransom. Led by the calculating and cold-blooded “Mr. Blue” (Robert Shaw), the criminals hold 17 passengers hostage in one of the train cars. The Transit Authority, caught off guard, scrambles to negotiate, with Transit Police Lieutenant Zachary Garber (Walter Matthau) acting as the primary liaison.

As the city races against time to deliver the money within the tight deadline, Garber tries to outwit the hijackers using his knowledge of the subway system. Tensions rise underground and above as the clock ticks, leading to a suspenseful cat-and-mouse game. The film is known for its gritty realism, sharp dialogue, and iconic score by David Shire. It remains a landmark of 1970s crime cinema.
