About the film
Better Off Dead (1985) is a dark teen comedy directed by Savage Steve Holland. The film follows Lane Meyer, a high school student devastated when his girlfriend, Beth, leaves him for the popular ski team captain, Roy Stalin. Lane’s attempts to win her back lead to a series of comedic misadventures, including failed suicide attempts and encounters with eccentric characters like a persistent paperboy and a French exchange student, Monique. Through Monique’s support, Lane regains his confidence, fixes his car, and challenges Roy on the ski slopes, ultimately realizing his worth beyond Beth’s approval. The film blends absurdist humor with heartfelt moments, capturing the trials of teenage life in a unique, surreal style.
